Why my Birthday and my Halloween Sucked

A few weeks back I began to think what I would do for my birthday. I looked on my iCal and saw that it was going to land on a Monday and chances of getting something significant going on a Monday didn't seem likely. Also, my good friend Mr. Martin Gregory Knowles was leaving for San Francisco on Saturday morning and would be residing in the Bay area indefinitely. I decided to have some friends get together on the Friday before, thinking a Saturday morning hangover is almost always better than one on a Tuesday.

Friday night was great. A bunch of friends came out to dinner to the brewery behind my house. No complaints about my birthday celebration. Not to mention that earlier in the week I was treated to a Cursive show at the Troubadour which was also completely awesome and much better than I had expected.

Skip forward two days to my actual birthday. I don't work at a job where I can get someone to cover my shift, and if it were up to me, I won't be working at a job like that ever again. So working on my birthday will just have to be something I learn to deal with. Aside from the shitty evening commute (it can reach over an hour on a route that normally takes 10 mintues) I really enjoy my job. So going into work wasn't necessarily a bad thing. But when there is a big deadline the next day, it can be a bad thing.

I got there at 9:00 am and left at 8:30 pm. True, the work day was split up with a lunch break and an awesome dinner on the company dime that consisted of sushi and Sapporo from the Japanese restaurant across the street, but spending almost 12 hours at work on your birthday is never a good idea. I came home and hung out with Robin, which is always a good thing. For a brief moment, I was thinking of seeing if he wanted to go to the brewery for a beer, but I decided I wasn't even feeling up to it. The 12 hours at worked killed my spirits.

Moving on to Halloween. Is today Halloween? Could have fooled me. I haven't felt the Halloween spirit all month and today is no exception. Maybe I am outgrowing the holiday. I certainly hope not, but I can't really explain why I'm not excited for this evening. Landing on a Tuesday doesn't help the situation. After getting home from work around 7:00, I promptly got my pumpkin from the kitchen table and started carving. The seeds were seasoned and baked and still there was no nostalgic feeling to be had. Could it be the fact that not a single kid has come by the house to ask for a trick? Not even a treat! Could it be that I haven't even seen a single person in costume all day? Could it be that I ate a peanut butter and jelly and kix sandwich for dinner tonight? Probably.

So here I am, typing away at my computer during the heart of Halloween night, wondering how I came up short. And yes, that is my Bill Cosby pumpkin.

That pumpkin is amazing, that sandwich is the scarier than anything i saw on halloween (and i saw some
    SCARY
    stuff.
I’m sorry that your halloween was less than fabulous. Maybe it was because your costume last year was so amazing that you didn’t have much left over for this year. I’m sure you’ll be back on top of things by 2007. Or maybe you’re right, it probably was the sandwich.

I’m with her. It was the sandwich. The photo really freaked me out. I was trying to figure out what kinda mold spores grew on your sandwich.

    That jack o’lantern rules.

Maybe it didnt feel like Halloween all month because it was so damn hot out.

maybe its because no one in orange county gets dressed up for halloween anymore and all the parents are to scared for their kids to go out after dark? Im just glad our childhood was better then the kids these days who cant do shit except sit on computers and play video games.

Sorry your birthday wasn’t very exciting this year. Stupid work. I had such a fun time with you at the Cursive show though. I wish I could have spent your actual birthday with you but there has been much celebrating for your birthday…you’ve had like 3 birthday weeks! Islands on friday should be alot of fun. On halloween I only saw one person dressed up (Flava Flav) the entire day and not one single trick or treater. What a bummer. I used to live for halloween. Hopefully we will be able to bring the magic back next year. I agree, your Kix sandwich looks nasty but I’m sure it tasted good. Your Cosby pumpkin was rad.
