It's always a rare delight when you go to the movies and aren't completely frustrated for spending so much money on it, especially when tickets these days cost more than DVDs. The Science of Sleep by Michel Gondry is more than just a rare delight; it's an exploration of creativity and imagination.
The lead character, Stéphane, has a problem isolating reality from his dreaming which puts him into quirky situations throughout the movie. The filmmakers do a great job sharing his perspective of life with the viewer by also creating a sense of awkwardness through editing and overlapping of the different states of consciousness. Far from the formulaic blockbusters relentlessly discharged by mainstream Hollywood, The Science of Sleep mixes live action with stop motion animation for a surreal blend of reality and and the subconscious.
I wasn't expecting a comedy but I was pleased with the amount of subtle humor in the film that got me to chuckle quite often. The interactions between the characters are so interesting and humorous that you really enjoy following Stéphane around in his universe. And although the movie might not be for everyone, the people that will appreciate it will probably put it in their year’s top 10 list. For all of you artsy types out there, this is a must see.

I just loved this movie. It was so inspiring and imaginative. I could have watched it over and over again.
