Morgan bought me a ticket to the 5th Annual Lost Abbey Barrel Night in San Marcos California. A few other friends also had tickets and since we knew we would be drinking a lot at the event, we decided it would be best if we were to take a limo down so we wouldn’t have to drive home after drinking all night. Having drinks in the limo on the way down to the event turned out to be a very nice added bonus. We had asked for a limo or town car that would fit 6 people, but due to two different booking issues, we ended up with a 16 person stretched expedition limo for the same price.
The Barrel Night consisted of 6 courses, with each course paired with at least one barrel-aged beer from Lost Abbey. As part of the price of admission, each person got one bottle of Veritas 010 and the option to buy a second bottle. The beers were mostly sours with the exception of the barrel-aged Serpents Stout and the bonus Older Viscosity they brought out for dessert because they ran out of ice cream.
Here is a quick rundown of the menu:
- Cheese Course – 4 types of cheeses and fruit paired with Devotion and Avant Garde
- First Course – Carlsbad Aquafarm Black Mussels paired with Project X, a single barrel sour from their spontaneous fermentation program (my favorite of the night)
- Second Course – Spring Mix Salad with Veritas 010 apricot vinaigrette paired with Veritas 010
- Third Course – Shitake Mushroom Soup paired with Cuvee de Tomme barrel 002
- Fourth Course – Porchetta on sweet potato mash with roasted potatoes and carrots paired with Gift of the Magi barrel 187
- Dessert Course – Caramel-Nutty Ice Cream paired with Serpent’s Stout barrels 934 & 935
